CURRENT AFFAIRS | MAY 13, 2026
In one of the largest recoveries in recent anti-Naxal operations, security forces in Chhattisgarh’s Bastar division have seized approximately Rs 1 crore in cash along with 3 AK-47 rifles, 12-bore guns, an air gun, 13 SLR magazines, 132 BGL shells, and 270 weapons — recovered from forest hideouts deep in Abujhmad, where slain Maoist cadres had concealed them.
Since 2024, over 100 Maoists have been gunned down in Abujhmad alone, including CPI (Maoist) General Secretary Nambala Keshava Rao alias Basavaraju. Hundreds more have surrendered. The operations are spearheaded by the CRPF (CoBRA battalions), supported by ITBP, BSF, STF and the Chhattisgarh DRG, aligned with the Union Government’s stated target of eliminating Left-Wing Extremism (LWE) by 31 March 2026.
Constitutional & Legal Framework
UAPA, 1967 — The Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act is the core anti-terror statute used against CPI (Maoist) cadres. The Fourth Schedule of UAPA lists banned terrorist organisations.
BNS, 2023 (Section 147) — Replaces IPC Section 121; punishes “waging war against the Government of India” with death or life imprisonment.
Fifth Schedule (Articles 244 & 244(1)) — Provides for administration of Scheduled Areas in States like Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Odisha. PESA, 1996 (Panchayats Extension to Scheduled Areas Act) operationalises Gram Sabha authority in these regions.
Article 249 — Empowers Parliament to legislate on State List subjects (e.g., public order, police) in the national interest with a 2/3 Rajya Sabha resolution.
CLAT 2027 Angle
LWE/Naxalism appears often in GK and Legal Reasoning. Memorise this pair: UAPA is preventive-detention-style anti-terror, NSA is preventive-detention proper, AFSPA is for “disturbed areas,” and COFEPOSA is for economic offences. Also know the “SAMADHAN” doctrine for anti-LWE strategy (Smart leadership · Aggressive strategy · Motivation · Actionable intelligence · Dashboards · Harnessing tech · Action plan · No-access to financing) — directly cited in MHA policy documents.
