BSF Turns 60: From Border Security to Territorial Security — CLAT 2027

CURRENT AFFAIRS | MAY 30, 2026

On the 60th anniversary of the Border Security Force, Home Minister Amit Shah signalled a major shift: the Centre is considering moving the BSF from ‘border security’ to ‘territorial security’, backed by a ‘quadrangular’ grid of technology and troops along the frontier.

Constitutional & Legal Framework

The Border Security Force is a Central Armed Police Force raised under the BSF Act, 1968, guarding India’s land borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh in peacetime. Article 355 casts a duty on the Union to protect every State against external aggression and internal disturbance. In 2021, a Home Ministry order extended BSF jurisdiction to 50 km inside Punjab, West Bengal and Assam — contested by those states.

Why This Matters for CLAT 2027

Speaking in Bhuj, Home Minister Amit Shah said the government will launch a new concept of ‘territorial security’ in the BSF’s 60th year, redefining the force’s areas of responsibility. He inaugurated two new Border Outposts — G-7 and G-13 — and described a ‘quadrangular’ security grid that fuses drones, radar and watch towers with personnel, alongside the Smart Border Surakhsha Project. For CLAT, place this within the BSF Act 1968, the family of CAPFs (BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP, SSB, Assam Rifles), the Comprehensive Integrated Border Management System (CIBMS), and the distinction between the International Border and the Line of Control.

The CLAT Angle

Border management, CAPFs and Centre-state friction over BSF jurisdiction are core internal-security topics. CLAT legal-reasoning sets test the BSF Act, Article 355, and the federal balance when a central force operates deep inside a state’s territory.
