If you cleared CLAT PG 2026, the next six weeks will define the next decade of your legal career. The fifth and final CLAT PG allotment list is out, the confirmation-fee window for freeze candidates closed on 20 May 2026 at 1:00 PM, and the balance NLU fee is due by 30 May 2026, 5:00 PM. The question now is not whether you got an NLU — it is whether you can convert NLSIU, NALSAR or NLU Delhi into an admission letter that actually opens postgraduate doors.
Where CLAT PG 2026 candidates stand on 22 May
- Fifth merit list released by Consortium of NLUs on 15 May 2026.
- Rs 20,000 confirmation fee deadline closed 20 May 2026, 1:00 PM.
- Balance fee at allotted NLU due 30 May 2026, 5:00 PM.
- Fifth round is final: only Freeze is available.
The NLSIU LLM filter: rank is necessary but not sufficient
NLSIU’s LLM cut-off in earlier rounds closed under rank 100 in the General-AI bucket. A rank under 100 typically secures NLSIU; ranks under 300 secure NALSAR or NLU Delhi. But unlike the UG track, the PG admission does not stop at rank. NLSIU asks two more things from you: an interview and a statement of purpose.
What the NLSIU LLM interview tests
- Why LLM, why now. Faculty want a coherent answer that links your UG, work and research interest.
- Research-question articulation. Vague areas (“constitutional law”) lose; specific questions (“anti-defection law and the 10th Schedule under Subhash Desai”) win.
- Recent landmark cases. If you cannot summarise one judgment from the last six months in your stated area, the interview is over.
- Methodology hint. Doctrinal, empirical, comparative — you don’t have to be an expert, but you must know the words.
SoP that actually opens NLSIU’s door
Most CLAT PG applicants over-narrate their CV in the SoP and lose the seat. NLSIU prefers a four-paragraph structure: (1) the problem you want to research and why it matters, (2) why you, in two specific anecdotes, (3) which methods you would attempt, (4) what NLSIU specifically — faculty, centres, journals — adds to your project. Keep it under 800 words. Avoid filler adjectives.
Five interview rehearsals worth doing this week
- Pick one Supreme Court judgment from main.sci.gov.in from the last 90 days in your stated area. Summarise it in 90 seconds out loud.
- Answer “Why LLM, not litigation?” in two minutes, on camera, then watch yourself.
- Write your research question in one sentence. Cut it by half. Cut it by half again.
- Read one issue of the NLS Indian Law Review or NUJS Law Review. Identify which faculty publishes in your area.
- Mock-interview with a senior who has cleared CLAT PG previously.
Beyond NLSIU: NALSAR, NLU Delhi, NLIU Bhopal LLM tracks
If your rank places you at NALSAR or NLU Delhi, the strategy shifts. NALSAR has a strong corporate/IPR track and a 2-year LLM in Insolvency & Bankruptcy Laws. NLU Delhi runs a one-year LLM that is admission-by-AILET. Read the side-by-side LLM comparison, our CLAT PG counselling explainer, and the LLM specialisation chooser before reporting day.
What can still go wrong in the next eight days
- Balance fee not paid by 30 May, 5:00 PM — seat lapses. No PG sixth round.
- Provisional degree pending? Most NLUs accept a “result awaited” letter only if it carries the university seal and registrar signature.
- Bar Council enrolment for working candidates: keep your sanad and CoP scans ready; many NLUs ask for proof of legal practice for the working-professional track.
Confused about the SoP angle or the freeze-only mechanic? The CLAT Gurukul helpline 7033005444 is running a PG-only counselling window through 30 May.
