NLU Orientation July 2026: The 1L Pre-Arrival Checklist for New Law Students

Students walking on a college campus during orientation

If you have just frozen your CLAT 2026 NLU seat, the next milestone is not far — most NLUs commence their 2026-27 academic session in early July 2026, with first-year orientation in the opening week. That gives you roughly six weeks to convert from “got an NLU” to “ready to be a first-year”. This is what June 2026 should look like.

The June 2026 NLU 1L preparation map

  1. Week 1 (first week of June): Documents.
  2. Week 2: Banking, SIM, hostel kit.
  3. Week 3: Laptop, books, reading habit.
  4. Week 4: Reach NLU city; settle in.
  5. Week 5: Orientation and Day 1 of classes.

1. Document pack — get these certified before 15 June

Every NLU’s reporting checklist runs through the same 9 documents. Get two certified copies of each, then digital scans on Google Drive:

  • Class 10 and 12 mark sheets + Class 12 passing certificate.
  • CLAT 2026 admit card + scorecard + provisional allotment letter.
  • Transfer Certificate (TC) from your school.
  • Character Certificate from school principal.
  • Migration Certificate — request this from your Class 12 board now; it can take 2-3 weeks.
  • Caste/Category/EWS/PwD certificate in the prescribed format (state-specific).
  • Domicile certificate if your NLU has a state quota.
  • Income certificate if you intend to apply for need-based aid.
  • Six recent passport-size photographs + two stamp-size.

2. Banking and SIM — set up before you travel

Open a regular savings account with strong UPI support and a debit card with no annual fee. PSU and large private banks both work. Ask for cheque-book + ATM card in your home city — getting cards reissued in the NLU city wastes a week. Keep a second SIM ready for the NLU city: most campuses are in tier-2 locations where one carrier’s signal beats the others.

3. Hostel kit — what NLUs supply vs what you buy

Most NLU hostels supply a bed, a chair, a table and a cupboard. You buy:

  • Mattress (3-4 inch foam, single bed size).
  • Two cotton bedsheets + pillow + pillowcases.
  • Bucket + mug + slippers + towel rack.
  • Steel water bottle (1-litre) + steel plate & spoon (mess substitution).
  • Extension board with surge protector + universal adapter.
  • Padlock for the cupboard.
  • Basic medical kit: paracetamol, ORS, band-aids, antiseptic.

4. Laptop and software — what 1L work actually demands

The smartest spec for an NLU first-year is a 14-inch laptop with 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD and 8+ hours of battery. You will be reading judgments, drafting memorials, writing legal-research papers and joining Zoom moots — none of which need a gaming GPU. Install: a PDF reader with highlight + comment, a citation manager (Zotero is free), Microsoft Word or Google Docs, and SCC Online / Manupatra credentials (NLU library issues these after Day 1).

5. Books and reading — 30 minutes a day from 1 June

You don’t need to crack first-semester syllabus in June. You need to build the muscle. Recommended:

  • One bare act of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita / IPC (Universal or LexisNexis).
  • One bare Constitution of India (cheapest standard edition).
  • Granville Austin’s The Indian Constitution: Cornerstone of a Nation — read 20 pages a week.
  • One quality newspaper, end-to-end, 30 minutes daily.
  • Read 10 landmark judgments from main.sci.gov.in (Kesavananda, Maneka, Indra Sawhney, Vishaka, Puttaswamy, Navtej Johar, NJAC, Sabarimala, S.R. Bommai, ADM Jabalpur).

6. What committees to chase — and what to avoid in week 1

Moot court societies, debate, the law review, legal aid, MUN, sports, the cultural fest committee — every NLU has 15+ student bodies and most recruit between August and October. The single biggest mistake is signing up for six committees in the first month. Pick one academic body (moot, law review or legal aid) and one extracurricular (debate or sport). Add more in second year.

The 1L reality nobody mentions

Reading loads in first semester are heavy — assume 60-80 pages of cases and articles per subject per week, across five subjects. Attendance is mandatory (most NLUs enforce 75%, some 80%). Term papers begin in week 6. The students who collapse are not the ones with weak ranks — they are the ones who don’t build a daily-reading habit in June.
