Trump’s Beijing Summit: Iran, AI, Tariffs on the Table as Xi Warns on Taiwan

CURRENT AFFAIRS | MAY 13, 2026

US President Donald Trump touched down in Beijing on 13 May 2026 for a three-day state visit — the first by a US POTUS to China since his own November 2017 trip, nearly nine years ago. The Trump-Xi summit revolves around five “Bs” (Boeing, Beef, Beans, Board of Trade, Board of Investment) on the US side and three “Ts” (Taiwan, Tariffs, Technology) on the Chinese side. AI executives Tim Cook (Apple), Elon Musk (Tesla) and Jensen Huang (Nvidia) accompany the President. The tariff truce expires 12 August.

For India, the summit is a multipolarity stress-test. CLAT 2027 should treat this as the GK + Legal Reasoning anchor for IR-themed passages.

Constitutional & Legal Framework

  • One China Policy — diplomatic recognition of PRC alone; India and US both subscribe to it while maintaining unofficial Taiwan ties.
  • WTO regime — China acceded on 11 December 2001; tariff measures invoke the MFN principle (Article I GATT) and dispute settlement under the DSU.
  • UNCLOS, 1982 — Article 57 (200 nm EEZ) is central to South China Sea contests; both US and India are non-parties to UNCLOS Annexure jurisdictions, but customarily compliant.
  • Quad & BRICS — the two informal groupings frame the Indo-Pacific balance India navigates.
  • Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, 1961 — governs state-visit protocols and head-of-state immunity.

  • Strategic autonomy / multi-alignment as India’s IR doctrine post-NAM 1.0.
  • Reverse Maneka Gandhi-style argument — balancing trade gains, security concerns, and human-rights critiques (Uyghurs, Hong Kong, Tibet).
  • WTO jurisprudence: US-Steel and Aluminum Products (2022 panel) and EC-Bananas as anchors.
  • India’s role at BRICS@20 FM Meet (same week) as the “mediator” in West Asia, balancing Iran-US-China.

Key Facts to Memorise

  • WTO membership: China 2001; India a founder member 1995.

Mnemonic: TRUMP-XI — 5 Bs vs 3 Ts

China 3 Ts: Taiwan, Tariffs, Technology.
India angle: “multi-alignment” — engage all, commit to none.
Frameworks: One China Policy · WTO MFN · UNCLOS Art 57 (EEZ) · Quad vs BRI.
