60th Jnanpith Award Goes to Vairamuthu — Tamil Literature, 8th Schedule & CLAT 2027

CURRENT AFFAIRS | 23 MAY 2026

The 60th Jnanpith Award (for the year 2025) has been conferred on the celebrated Tamil poet, lyricist and novelist Dr R. Vairamuthu. He is the third Tamil writer ever to receive India’s highest literary honour — after P.V. Akilan (1975) and D. Jayakanthan (2002) — and the first to be honoured primarily for Tamil poetry. For CLAT 2027 aspirants this is a high-yield GA story: it knits together the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, the Bharatiya Jnanpith Trust, and the distinction between the Sahitya Akademi Award and the Jnanpith.

Constitutional & Institutional Framework

  • Bharatiya Jnanpith: Trust founded by the Sahu Jain family in 1944; first Jnanpith Award conferred in 1965 on G. Sankara Kurup (Malayalam).
  • Eighth Schedule: Lists 22 scheduled languages eligible for the Jnanpith.
  • Article 343–351: Constitutional provisions on official languages, Hindi development, and protection of linguistic minorities.
  • Sahitya Akademi Award (1955): Annual award given in each Eighth Schedule language plus English and Rajasthani — distinct from Jnanpith.

Why this matters for CLAT 2027

Awards-and-honours questions appear in CLAT GA every year. Expect 1–2 MCQs on the Jnanpith — founding year, first recipient, prize money, Eighth Schedule linkage, and Tamil laureates. RC passages on Indian literature and linguistic federalism may use Vairamuthu’s recognition as the lead.
