1. Hormuz: Iran’s state TV says 7 tankers were damaged overnight
According to Iran’s state television, quoting the navy of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), 7 oil tankers were damaged overnight on 21–22 October 2026 in the Strait of Hormuz. By that account, 4 tankers that were transferring oil were targeted and caught fire, and 3 were immobilised after hitting naval mines. The claim has not been independently confirmed, and no source has said who laid the mines. Days earlier the International Maritime Organization (IMO) said it could not assure ships of mine-free transit. The strait matters because about 20 million barrels a day of oil passed through it in 2024, roughly 20% of world petroleum liquids consumption (US EIA).
2. Modi and Tusk agree to double India–Poland trade by 2030
Prime Minister Narendra Modi held talks with Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk in New Delhi on 22 October 2026. The two sides agreed to double bilateral trade by 2030 (from about $6.3 billion) and to expand defence ties, including a defence-industry dialogue. They also announced a StartUp Bridge and tech hackathons for young people. India and Poland became Strategic Partners in August 2024, during Modi’s visit to Warsaw, the first by an Indian Prime Minister in 45 years.
3. India–New Zealand FTA comes into force
The India–New Zealand Free Trade Agreement came into force on 20 October 2026. New Zealand has removed tariffs on 100% of Indian exports. On India’s side, as reported, 57% of tariff lines become duty-free at once, rising to 82% in phases. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal had announced on 21 September that the deal was finalised and would take effect on 20 October. New Zealand’s capital is Wellington.
4. Asian Para Games: India reaches 88 medals
At the 2026 Asian Para Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan (18–24 October), India had won 88 medals by the evening of 22 October: 21 gold, 26 silver and 41 bronze, placing fourth on the medal table. This is a running tally; the count can rise until the Games close.
5. Karnataka HC: track advocates practising without clearing AIBE
In M. Prasanna Kumar v. State of Karnataka, Justice H.P. Sandesh of the Karnataka High Court directed the Karnataka State Bar Council to evolve a mechanism to track and flag advocates who do not clear the All India Bar Examination (AIBE) within two years of provisional enrolment (reported 19–20 October 2026). The court refused to quash a criminal case against an advocate, enrolled in 2011, who allegedly practised for about a decade without clearing AIBE, and held that criminal liability can arise under Section 45 of the Advocates Act, 1961. The AIBE is conducted by the Bar Council of India (since 2010). In 2023 a five-judge Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court upheld it in BCI v. Bonnie Foi Law College, overruling V. Sudeer (1999).
- Chokepoint: a narrow sea passage that a large share of world trade must pass through.
- Free Trade Agreement: a treaty under which partners cut or remove tariffs on each other’s goods.
- Provisional enrolment: an advocate’s enrolment before clearing the AIBE; the Karnataka order concerns those who do not clear it within two years.
- Strait of Hormuz links the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman.
- India–Poland Strategic Partnership: August 2024; trade target: double by 2030.
- New Zealand capital: Wellington; FTA in force 20 Oct 2026.
- Hormuz carries about a fifth of world oil consumption, so any disruption affects fuel prices for importers such as India.
- For Legal Reasoning: the AIBE was upheld by the Supreme Court in 2023, and Section 45 of the Advocates Act makes illegal practice an offence.
- Hormuz claim: 7 tankers (4 fire + 3 mines), per Iran’s state TV; not independently confirmed.
- Asian Para Games 2026: India 88 medals (21 G, 26 S, 41 B) as of 22 Oct; Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.
