Dalai Lama Wins Grammy For Best Audio Book — A Spiritual Honour From Dharamshala

CURRENT AFFAIRS | JUNE 4, 2026

The 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, was formally presented the Grammy Award at his Dharamshala residence on 3 June 2026 for “Meditations: The Reflections of His Holiness the Dalai Lama” — Best Audio Book, Narration and Storytelling Recording. The honour adds to his 1989 Nobel Peace Prize, 2007 US Congressional Gold Medal and 2012 Templeton Prize.

Constitutional & Legal Framework

  • Articles 25-28 — freedom of conscience, religion and religious affairs — protect Tibetan Buddhist practice in India.
  • Foreigners Act, 1946 — Tibetans in India hold an Identity Certificate, not an Indian passport.
  • Simla Convention 1914 / McMahon Line — eastern boundary with Tibet (not accepted by China).
  • Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) — exile administration at McLeodganj since 1960; India hosts but does not recognise as sovereign.
  • Copyright Act 1957 — Section 14(p) (sound recording) and Section 38 (performers’ rights) — relevant to spoken-word albums.
  • Padma awards — civilian honours; Bharat Ratna remains the highest possible recognition.

Why This Matters For CLAT 2027

  • Articles 25-28 freedom-of-religion jurisprudence is recurring Legal Reasoning material.
  • The McMahon Line / Simla Convention 1914 is a classic GK + Constitutional history question.
  • Foreigners Act 1946 vs CAA 2019 framework is a topical citizenship-law area.
  • Copyright Act Section 38 performers’ rights is sharp Legal Aptitude application territory.
