India–New Zealand FTA Comes into Force on 20 October 2026

DAILY NEWS WRAP | 23 OCTOBER 2026

What happened

The India–New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA) came into force on 20 October 2026. Under the agreement, New Zealand has removed tariffs on 100 per cent of Indian exports, giving all Indian goods duty-free access to the New Zealand market. On its side, India has made 57 per cent of tariff lines duty-free immediately, with a total of 82 per cent to be covered as cuts are phased in over time.

The date of entry into force had been announced in advance: on 21 September 2026 Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said the agreement had been finalised and would come into force on 20 October, as reported by All India Radio News. Deccan Herald and Maritime Gateway reported the start of the agreement and the duty-free access for Indian exports.

What an FTA does

A free trade agreement is a treaty under which two or more countries cut or remove customs duties (tariffs) on goods traded between them. Agreements are usually written as lists of tariff lines, the individual product categories in a country’s customs schedule. A country may remove duty on some lines at once and on others in stages, which is why the two sides of this FTA have different numbers: New Zealand’s offer is complete from day one, while India’s opening is partly immediate and partly phased.

Signed, finalised, in force

Exam questions often turn on the stage of an agreement. Talks are concluded, the text is finalised or signed, and the agreement later enters into force, which is when the tariff cuts actually apply. For the India–New Zealand FTA, the key date is 20 October 2026, the date it came into force. A related static fact: the capital of New Zealand is Wellington.

For CLAT, link the numbers to the right side: 100 per cent belongs to New Zealand’s tariff removal on Indian exports, while 57 and 82 per cent describe India’s own tariff lines. Mixing these up is the most common error in questions on this agreement.
