Modi and Tusk Agree to Double India–Poland Trade by 2030

DAILY NEWS WRAP | 23 OCTOBER 2026

What happened

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Prime Minister of Poland, Donald Tusk, held talks in New Delhi on 22 October 2026. The two leaders agreed to double bilateral trade by 2030, from about $6.3 billion today. They also resolved to expand defence ties, including a dialogue on defence industry cooperation, according to PTI and Business Standard reports of the talks.

The leaders announced steps aimed at young people and technology: India and Poland will set up a StartUp Bridge and organise tech hackathons for youth, as reported by The Tribune. These are meant to connect start-ups and young innovators in the two countries.

The background: a Strategic Partnership since 2024

India–Poland relations were raised to a Strategic Partnership in August 2024, during Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Warsaw on 21–22 August 2024. That was the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Poland in 45 years. The joint statement issued then was titled ‘Establishment of Strategic Partnership’. The October 2026 talks in New Delhi build on that framework, with trade and defence as the two main tracks.

Why it matters

A target to double trade in a fixed period gives both governments a measurable goal. Defence industry cooperation is a long-term track, because it involves joint production and supply chains, not just purchases. For exam purposes, the useful pairings are: the leaders (Modi and Tusk), the place (New Delhi), the date (22 October 2026), the target (double trade by 2030) and the background (Strategic Partnership, August 2024, Warsaw).

Questions on bilateral visits usually test exactly these pairings, or the status of a relationship (for example, ‘strategic partnership’). Note the order of events: the partnership came first, in Warsaw in 2024; the trade target came in New Delhi in 2026.

🔵 Key Terms

  • Bilateral trade: the total value of goods (and services) traded between two countries.
  • Strategic Partnership: a formal upgrade of ties, covering areas such as trade, defence and technology.
  • Hackathon: a short, intensive event where teams build technology solutions.
