Indian Navy Hands Over CTF 154 Command in Bahrain | CLAT GK 2027

DAILY NEWS WRAP | 16 OCTOBER 2026

On 14 October 2026, the Indian Navy handed over command of Combined Task Force 154 (CTF 154) in Manama, Bahrain. The ceremony closed the Navy’s first-ever command of a task force of the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF), a milestone the Ministry of Defence described as the Navy’s “maiden command” of a CMF task force.

What happened

The Indian Navy had assumed command of CTF 154 on 11 February 2026. The handover on 14 October therefore ended a tenure of roughly eight months. According to the Ministry of Defence statement reported by PTI, the ceremony in Manama marked the completion of the Navy’s maiden command of a CMF task force.

What CTF 154 does

CTF 154 is the CMF’s dedicated multinational maritime training task force. It runs training and capacity building to strengthen interoperability and operational readiness across the 47-nation CMF partnership. Its work falls under the CMF’s maritime domain enhancement training framework.

What the Indian tenure delivered

The defence ministry listed the following activities during the tenure:

  • 20 Staff Enhancement Training engagements;
  • Operation Compass Rose 26-1 and Operation Southern Readiness 26-2;
  • the inaugural subject matter expert exchange on piracy and armed robbery, SPAR 2026.

Together these generated over 7,800 training hours, with personnel from 39 countries taking part across CTF 154 activities. The ministry said the tenure further reinforced the Indian Navy’s role as a “preferred security and training partner in the region”.

India and the CMF

India joined the CMF as an associate partner in 2022 and became a full member in 2023. Commanding a task force is a step beyond membership: the Navy led the planning and delivery of a multinational programme, with partner navies participating.

Exam fact: The Combined Maritime Forces is a partnership of 47 nations, headquartered in Manama, Bahrain.

Constitutional, legal and institutional framework

  • Combined Maritime Forces (CMF): a 47-nation maritime partnership headquartered in Manama, Bahrain.
  • CTF 154: the CMF task force dedicated to multinational maritime training and capacity building.
  • Ministry of Defence: issued the statement describing the tenure and the “maiden command”.
  • India’s status: associate partner of the CMF in 2022; full member in 2023.
  • This is a cooperative arrangement among navies; the news carries no constitutional article or statute.

CLAT angle

  • GK: one-line questions on the CMF: number of member nations (47), headquarters (Manama), and which task force India commanded (CTF 154).
  • Current affairs numbers: 11 February 2026 (start), 14 October 2026 (handover), 7,800+ training hours, 39 countries.
  • International relations passage: a text on multinational maritime cooperation may ask what “interoperability” and “capacity building” mean in practice.
  • Logical reasoning: a first-ever milestone differs from an ongoing role; the Navy commanded one task force, not the whole CMF.
