VIDEO EXPLAINER | 8 OCTOBER 2026

Indian cinema lost one of its most powerful voices on 8 October 2026. Veteran actor Nana Patekar died of a cardiac arrest early that morning in Goa. He was 75. Known for his intense screen presence and his distinctive dialogue delivery, he was also a soldier with the Territorial Army and a co-founder of a foundation for drought-affected farmers. This tribute sets out the facts of his life and work that are worth remembering, and closes with a method for revising “persons in news” for the GK section.

Early life

His real name was Vishwanath Patekar. He was born on 1 January 1951 in Murud-Janjira, Maharashtra. He studied at the J.J. Institute of Applied Art in Mumbai, and made his film debut in 1978 with Gaman.

A career of many roles

Across films such as Parinda, Krantiveer, Tirangaa, Ab Tak Chhappan and Welcome, audiences saw a different Nana in each role: at times an angry common man, at times a tough police officer, and at times a comic actor. Simple clothes, plain speech and a powerful delivery of dialogue became his identity.

Awards and honours

He received three National Film Awards:

  • Best Supporting Actor for Parinda;
  • Best Actor for Krantiveer; and
  • Best Supporting Actor again for Agni Sakshi.

In 2013, he was conferred the Padma Shri.

A soldier off screen

Off screen, he served in uniform. In 1988 he joined the Territorial Army, and during the Kargil War of 1999 he served with the Maratha Light Infantry.

Service to farmers

In 2015, together with actor Makarand Anaspure, he started the NAAM Foundation, which helps drought-affected farmers in Maharashtra. He used his fame as a means of service.

Persons in news: how to revise them

Obituaries and tributes of well-known public figures regularly appear in the current affairs part of competitive exams. The questions are rarely about opinions; they test hard, checkable facts. A simple routine keeps them manageable:

  1. Make a one-card profile. Name (and real name, if different), year and place of birth, field of work, and the date of death. For this tribute: Vishwanath Patekar, 1951, Murud-Janjira, actor, died 8 October 2026.
  2. List the “firsts” and the debut. Debut work and year are common questions: Gaman, 1978.
  3. Pair every award with its work. Questions often swap the film and the category, so write award, category and film on one line: Best Actor, Krantiveer; Best Supporting Actor, Parinda and Agni Sakshi.
  4. Note civilian honours with the year. Padma awards are frequently asked: Padma Shri, 2013.
  5. Record work outside the main field. Service, institutions founded and co-founders often become the “which statement is correct” question: Territorial Army (1988), Kargil (1999, Maratha Light Infantry), NAAM Foundation (2015, with Makarand Anaspure).
  6. Revise in spaced rounds. Read the card the same day, again after three days and again after a week. Test yourself by covering the right-hand column of the key-facts table below.

Keep the card factual. Do not add details you have not seen in a reliable source; a confident wrong fact costs more than a gap.

Institutional framework: the honours and bodies in this story

  • National Film Awards: three wins (two Best Supporting Actor, one Best Actor).
  • Padma Shri: conferred in 2013.
  • Territorial Army: joined in 1988.
  • Maratha Light Infantry: served with it during the Kargil War, 1999.
  • NAAM Foundation: co-founded in 2015 to help drought-affected farmers in Maharashtra.

The CLAT angle

  • GK “persons in news”: expect date of death, age, and one or two career markers.
  • Award-to-film matching is a favourite format: Best Actor for Krantiveer; Best Supporting Actor for Parinda and Agni Sakshi.
  • Statement-based questions may combine his military service (Territorial Army, Kargil) with his farm-relief work (NAAM Foundation).
  • Know the year of the civilian honour: Padma Shri, 2013.
