VIDEO EXPLAINER | 8 OCTOBER 2026
India finished the 20th Asian Games, held in Aichi Prefecture and Nagoya, Japan, from 19 September to 4 October 2026, with 21 gold, 27 silver and 37 bronze, a total of 85 medals and 4th place in the medal table. Uzbekistan also won exactly 21 gold, yet it finished 5th. This explainer answers that puzzle, then goes through India’s report card: the historic hockey double, two first-ever individual golds, the gap in athletics, and how 85 compares with India’s record.
1. The Games in numbers
The Aichi-Nagoya Games featured 43 sports, 71 disciplines and 469 medal events, and mixed martial arts (MMA) made its debut. China topped the medal table with 169 gold and 341 medals in all. Host nation Japan was second (83 gold, 269 total) and South Korea third (39 gold, 150 total). India came next.
2. 21 gold each: why India is 4th
The medal table ranks nations first by the number of gold medals. If gold is level, the silver count decides. India and Uzbekistan were tied on 21 gold, but India had 27 silver to Uzbekistan’s 25, so India took 4th place. The total haul does not decide the order; gold comes first, then silver.
3. Hockey: a double for the first time
The most significant result of the Games came in hockey. The women’s team beat defending champions China 1–0 in the final, winning India’s first women’s hockey gold since 1982, a wait of 44 years. The men’s team defended its title, beating Malaysia 5–1 in the final for India’s 5th men’s hockey gold at the Asian Games.
It was the first time India won both the men’s and the women’s hockey gold at the same Asian Games. Both golds carry a further prize: direct qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
4. Historic firsts and a weak spot
Two women made history in individual events. Kumkum Mohod won the women’s individual recurve gold in archery, the first Indian woman to do so. Pranavi Urs won the women’s individual golf gold, the first Indian woman to win an individual golf gold at the Asian Games. In wrestling, Aman Sehrawat won gold in the 57 kg category.
Athletics is the area that needs analysis. India won 24 athletics medals (1 gold, 9 silver, 14 bronze), but only one of them was gold: the women’s 4×400 m relay, run by Kiran Pahal, Machettira Poovamma, Prachi Choudhary and Vithya Ramraj.
5. How 85 compares
At the Hangzhou Asian Games (held in 2023), India won a record 107 medals. The 85 medals at Aichi-Nagoya make this India’s second-best Asian Games haul, but 22 fewer than the record. Looking ahead, the Asian Games will be held in Doha in 2030 and Riyadh in 2034. The Games are run by the Olympic Council of Asia, headquartered in Kuwait City.
Institutional framework
- Olympic Council of Asia (OCA): the body that runs the Asian Games; headquarters in Kuwait City.
- 20th Asian Games: Aichi Prefecture and Nagoya, Japan, 19 Sep – 4 Oct 2026; 43 sports, 71 disciplines, 469 medal events.
- Medal-table rule: ranked by gold first; if gold is equal, by silver.
- Olympic qualification: the hockey golds earned both Indian teams direct berths at Los Angeles 2028.
- Future hosts: Doha (2030) and Riyadh (2034).
The CLAT angle
- Static GK: edition (20th), host (Aichi-Nagoya, Japan), dates, and the next two hosts, Doha 2030 and Riyadh 2034.
- A logical-reasoning set can be built on the tie-break rule: equal gold, so compare silver.
- Firsts are favourite one-liners: Kumkum Mohod (recurve archery) and Pranavi Urs (golf).
- Hockey double: women 1–0 v China (first since 1982), men 5–1 v Malaysia (5th gold); both qualify for LA 2028.
- Simple comparison: 107 at Hangzhou v 85 at Aichi-Nagoya is a drop of 22 medals.
