DAILY NEWS WRAP | 19 OCTOBER 2026
Pakistan has kept its airspace closed to Indian aircraft since April 2025, and has extended the ban roughly one month at a time ever since. A fresh extension was reported on 18 October 2026. The ban was first imposed on 23 April 2025.
What the ban covers
The ban applies to Indian-registered aircraft and to aircraft owned, operated or leased by Indian airlines. It covers both of Pakistan’s Flight Information Regions, Karachi and Lahore. A Flight Information Region is a block of airspace for which a country provides flight information and alerting services.
How it is extended: the NOTAM
Each extension is issued through a NOTAM, short for Notice to Airmen, by the Pakistan Airports Authority. A NOTAM is the standard notice through which an aviation authority tells pilots and airlines about a change, such as a closure or restriction of airspace. Because each notice runs for a limited period, the ban continues only if a new NOTAM is issued, which is why it has been renewed month by month.
The effect, and India’s reciprocal ban
With Pakistani airspace closed to them, westbound Indian flights take longer routes. India, for its part, keeps a reciprocal ban on Pakistani aircraft, in force since 30 April 2025. A reciprocal measure is one that mirrors the other side’s action.
Why no end date is given here
Reports have given different end dates for the current notice, so this page states only what is firmly established: the ban has been in place since April 2025 and has been extended monthly. In an exam, a question that depends on an unverified date should be answered from what the passage itself states.
Constitutional, legal and institutional framework
- A NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) is the notice through which an aviation authority announces airspace restrictions; the term is standard in civil aviation.
- The Pakistan Airports Authority issues the NOTAMs that extend this ban.
- A Flight Information Region (FIR) is a defined block of airspace; Pakistan has two, Karachi and Lahore.
- Reciprocity in international relations means a state answers a measure with a matching one.
CLAT angle
- GK: NOTAM = Notice to Airmen; Pakistan’s FIRs are Karachi and Lahore.
- Dates: Pakistan closed its airspace on 23 April 2025; India’s reciprocal ban from 30 April 2025.
- Status: extended monthly since April 2025; no end date is stated on this page.
- Inference: a ban renewed by time-limited notices lasts only as long as new notices are issued.
