A stealth frigate, a sea-mapping survey vessel and a submarine-hunter — PM Modi commissioned three Made-in-India warships at Kolkata in a single ceremony, all built by GRSE.
What Happened
PM Narendra Modi commissioned three indigenously built naval vessels into the Indian Navy at Kolkata on Sunday, all constructed by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE). The largest, INS Dunagiri, is a Project 17A stealth frigate carrying BrahMos surface-to-surface missiles, the MFSTAR multi-function radar, electronic-warfare systems and anti-submarine weapons (its sister ships are Nilgiri, Himgiri, Taragiri, Udaygiri and Vindhyagiri).
INS Sanshodhak is a Survey Vessel (Large) built to measure and map the sea — depth, seabed features and navigational routes. INS Agray, the smallest, is an Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft of the Arnala class, carrying lightweight torpedoes, indigenous anti-submarine rocket launchers and sonar to hunt submarines in shallow coastal waters. The ships carry over 75% indigenous content and involved 200+ MSMEs, signalling the “growing maturity of India’s naval shipbuilding ecosystem.”
🛡️ Defence Framework
The induction embodies Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliance) and Make in India in defence. Warships are conceived by the Navy’s Warship Design Bureau and built by GRSE, a Defence PSU under the Ministry of Defence. A Project 17A stealth frigate like Dunagiri advances India’s ambition of a blue-water navy.
🎯 Why This Matters for CLAT
Defence indigenisation, Atmanirbhar Bharat and named warship classes are reliable GK fodder; CLAT passages on self-reliance and strategic autonomy reward students who can place these facts in context.
