Five stories from 29 and 30 October 2026 that a CLAT, UPSC or SSC aspirant can revise from: three Supreme Court rulings, a glacial lake outburst in Bhutan and a G20 ministers’ meeting.
1. Supreme Court: NCLT administration “completely hijacked” by the corporate affairs ministry
On 29 October 2026 the Supreme Court, hearing a suo motu case on the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) and the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT), said the administration of the NCLT had been completely hijacked by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs. The bench headed by the Chief Justice of India said the NCLT president must be allowed to work with autonomy, and indicated that the authority to appoint personnel should rest with the NCLT president.
2. Bhutan glacial lake outburst triggers flood alert in West Bengal and Assam
On 29 and 30 October 2026 a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) from Shintaphu lake in Gasa district, Bhutan, triggered a flood alert in northern West Bengal and Assam. People living along the Sankosh river were evacuated, and officials later said the water level stayed below the danger mark. The Union Jal Shakti ministry issued a special advisory for both states.
3. Supreme Court strikes down Karnataka law validating the 2011 recruitment
On 29 October 2026 a Supreme Court bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and K Vinod Chandran declared unconstitutional the Karnataka Civil Services (Validation of Selection and Appointment of 2011 Batch Gazetted Probationers) Act, 2022. The court held that the legislature cannot annul the cancellation of the 2011 recruitment, which the High Court and the Supreme Court had upheld, and so cannot nullify the judgments of Constitutional courts.
4. G20 Foreign Ministers meet in Atlanta
The G20 Foreign Ministers are meeting in Atlanta, United States, on 30 and 31 October 2026, hosted by the US Secretary of State. The wars in Ukraine and Iran divide the members, and India’s External Affairs Minister is taking part in the two-day meeting. 5. Supreme Court on firecracker orders before Diwali
On 29 October 2026 a Supreme Court bench of Justices MM Sundresh and PB Varale said its orders on firecrackers had been violated “left and right”. The bench said the right to religious freedom is subject to public health and the protection of fundamental rights. Hindustan Times reported that the court pulled up the Delhi government and the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) over enforcement and reserved its order.
