India-Belgium Strategic Dialogue: What It Signals

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Belgium’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot in Brussels for the inaugural India-Belgium Strategic Dialogue. Held at the historic Egmont Palace, the meeting elevated a long-standing trade relationship into a broader strategic partnership nested within India’s deepening engagement with the European Union.

The two ministers reviewed cooperation across a wide canvas — political engagement, investment, clean energy, defence, mobility and pharmaceuticals — and identified new frontiers in ports, maritime connectivity, semiconductors and resilient, diversified supply chains. Jaishankar framed the relationship as one acquiring a distinctly strategic character, arguing that it now extends well beyond the proposed India-EU Free Trade Agreement, whose negotiations concluded on 27 January 2026. “The FTA is much bigger than just a trade agreement,” he observed, pointing to parallel cooperation in security, trusted technologies, research and innovation.

Belgium matters to India for reasons both symbolic and substantive. Brussels is the seat of the European Union’s core institutions, making Belgium a natural gateway to the wider India-EU strategic partnership and its Trade and Technology Council (TTC). Substantively, Belgium is among India’s most important trade partners in the EU, a relationship built overwhelmingly on precious stones. The Antwerp World Diamond Centre is the global hub for cut and polished diamonds, and Indian firms — particularly the diamond cutters of Surat — are deeply woven into that trade. The Port of Antwerp, one of Europe’s largest, adds a logistics dimension to the ties.

The timing is deliberate. With the India-EU FTA negotiations concluded and both sides seeking to convert political momentum into concrete gains, a strong bilateral track with an influential EU member helps anchor the larger agreement. Belgium’s expertise in ports, life sciences and advanced manufacturing complements India’s push for supply-chain resilience amid global uncertainty.

For India, the dialogue exemplifies a diplomatic method: pairing bilateral relationships with EU member states to reinforce the multilateral partnership with the bloc as a whole — a layered approach to a strategically vital region.

As India converts its concluded FTA with the EU into working partnerships, the Brussels dialogue shows how a single member state can become a strategic bridge to an entire bloc.
