DAILY NEWS WRAP | 22 OCTOBER 2026
What happened
The initial public offering (IPO) of Jio Platforms, the digital and telecom arm of Reliance Industries, opened on 21 October 2026 and was fully subscribed in about 100 minutes. The portion reserved for qualified institutional buyers (QIBs) was filled within roughly the first 10 minutes, according to exchange data reported by Business Today.
The issue is worth about ₹30,213 crore, all of it a fresh issue of shares with no offer-for-sale component. That makes it India’s largest IPO by issue size, ahead of Hyundai Motor India’s ₹27,870 crore issue of October 2024. The price band is ₹1,065–1,119 per share.
Two points need care. First, the IPO is not finished: bidding stays open until 23 October, allotment is expected around 26 October and listing around 28 October. ‘Fully subscribed’ only means bids already cover all the shares on offer. Second, it is not the fastest IPO subscription in Indian history. In January 2008, Reliance Power’s IPO was fully subscribed within about one minute. Jio’s record is that it is the fastest-subscribed among India’s recent mega IPOs, faster than Hyundai, Bajaj Housing Finance and LG Electronics India.
An IPO is the first sale of a company’s shares to the public. In India it is regulated by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) under the SEBI (Issue of Capital and Disclosure Requirements) Regulations. These require a red herring prospectus with risk disclosures and keep the bidding window open for at least three working days, even when the book fills early.
Strong demand from both institutions and retail investors shows the depth of Indian capital markets. A fresh issue also means the money raised goes to the company itself, for spending such as network expansion and debt reduction, rather than to existing shareholders.
- IPO (Initial Public Offering): a company’s first sale of shares to the public, after which it is listed on a stock exchange.
- Fully subscribed (1×): bids received equal the number of shares offered; above 1× is oversubscription.
- QIB: qualified institutional buyer, such as a mutual fund, insurer or foreign portfolio investor.
- Jio Platforms IPO: about ₹30,213 crore, India’s largest by size; opened 21 Oct 2026, closes 23 Oct.
- Fully subscribed in about 100 minutes: the fastest among India’s mega IPOs.
- IPO regulator: SEBI (set up 1988; statutory under the SEBI Act, 1992; HQ Mumbai).
- The previous largest IPO was Hyundai Motor India (₹27,870 crore, 2024).
- Records need precise wording: ‘fastest mega IPO’ is true; ‘fastest IPO ever’ is not (Reliance Power, 2008).
- Fresh issue = money to the company · Offer for sale = money to existing shareholders.
- Listing (tentative): 28 Oct 2026 on BSE and NSE.
