Amazon Deforestation Hits Record Low: 3,335 sq km, Down 42%

DAILY NEWS WRAP | 17 OCTOBER 2026

On 16 October 2026, Brazil’s space research agency INPE released data showing that deforestation in the Amazon has fallen to the lowest level on record: 3,335 sq km was destroyed in the 12 months through July 2026, about 42% less than in the preceding period.

What the data says

INPE counted 3,335 sq km of forest destroyed between August 2025 and July 2026. That is the lowest figure in a series that goes back to 1988, which makes it an all-time low rather than only a recent one. Compared with the preceding period, the fall is about 42%. The previous record low in the series was 4,571 sq km, set in 2011-12, so the new figure is well below even that earlier floor.

Who measures it and how

The agency behind the number is INPE, Brazil’s space research agency. The yearly figure comes from the PRODES satellite programme, which has produced a consistent series since 1988. A long, consistent series matters: a record low means something only because the same method has been used for decades. Note also the reporting year. The figure covers the 12 months through July, not January to December, so an exam question that asks for the “2026” figure should be read with that window in mind.

Beyond the Amazon: the Cerrado

The same release also covered the Cerrado, a separate biome. Its clearing fell by 24% to 5,517 sq km. The Cerrado fall is smaller than the Amazon’s, and the area cleared there is larger in absolute terms than the Amazon’s record-low figure. These are the kinds of comparisons that a careful reader can make straight from the numbers.

How a CLAT passage might use this

Environment is a regular subject for reading passages. A passage built on this news could describe satellite monitoring, give the two figures (3,335 sq km and 4,571 sq km) and ask what can be inferred: that the new figure is lower than the old record, that the series is long, and that the fall is a percentage of the preceding period. It would not support a claim about causes unless the passage itself stated one, so avoid reading reasons into the data.

Constitutional, legal and institutional framework

  • INPE (Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais) is Brazil’s space research agency; it releases the official deforestation figures.
  • PRODES is the satellite programme that measures yearly clearing of the Amazon; its series runs from 1988.
  • Deforestation means the permanent clearing of forest cover, as opposed to a temporary loss such as a seasonal change.
  • The reporting year is not the calendar year: the figure covers the 12 months through July (August 2025 to July 2026).

CLAT angle

  • GK: the headline numbers (3,335 sq km, about 42%, series since 1988) are typical one-line questions.
  • Environment passage: a reading passage may describe satellite-based monitoring and ask what a record low in a long series implies.
  • Abbreviations: INPE and PRODES are commonly confused; INPE is the agency, PRODES the programme.
  • Comparison items: the new figure against the previous low of 4,571 sq km (2011-12), and the Cerrado’s separate fall.

Key facts

Memory hook

“Thirty-three, thirty-five: a record-low year.” Remember 3,335 sq km, down about 42%, in a series that began in 1988.
