DAILY NEWS WRAP | 17 OCTOBER 2026

The four stories from the CLAT Gurukul Daily News Wrap of 17 October 2026, each with its exam fact: Amazon deforestation at a record low, ISRO’s Gaganyaan separation tests, a new Indian ambassador to Nepal, and a bronze medal for a 17-year-old at the Badminton World Junior Championships.

1. Amazon deforestation falls to the lowest level on record

On 16 October 2026, Brazil’s space research agency INPE released data showing 3,335 sq km of Amazon forest destroyed in the 12 months through July 2026 (August 2025 to July 2026). That is about 42% lower than the preceding period and the lowest figure in a series that goes back to 1988. The previous low was 4,571 sq km in 2011-12.

Exam fact: INPE is Brazil’s space research agency, and the series comes from its PRODES satellite programme, which has run since 1988.

2. ISRO completes Gaganyaan Crew Module-Service Module separation tests

ISRO has completed a series of Crew Module–Service Module separation tests for Gaganyaan, ahead of the first uncrewed mission, G1, which is targeted this year. The test set-up was at VSSC, Thiruvananthapuram.

Exam fact: Gaganyaan will carry 3 astronauts to an orbit of 400 km for a 3-day mission, with a splashdown in Indian waters.

3. Sudhakar Dalela named India’s ambassador to Nepal

On Friday evening, 16 October 2026, the Ministry of External Affairs announced Sudhakar Dalela as India’s new ambassador to Nepal. He is a Secretary-level officer, a step up from the Additional Secretary-rank envoys usually sent to Kathmandu. He succeeds Naveen Srivastava and was ambassador to Bhutan from 2022 to 2025.

Exam fact: The India–Nepal Treaty of Peace and Friendship was signed in 1950 (31 July 1950).

4. Jagsher Singh Khangurra wins bronze at the Badminton World Junior Championships

Jagsher Singh Khangurra, aged 17, won a bronze medal at the Badminton World Junior Championships at the Cairo International Stadium in Cairo, Egypt. He lost his semifinal 6-15, 15-13, 3-15 to Indonesia’s Radithya Bayu Wardhana.

Exam fact: The Badminton World Federation (BWF) is headquartered in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Constitutional, legal and institutional framework

  • INPE and PRODES: Brazil’s space research agency and its satellite programme that has measured Amazon clearing since 1988.
  • ISRO and Gaganyaan: the Crew Module carries astronauts, the Service Module supplies propulsion; they separate before return; G1 is the first uncrewed mission.
  • MEA and agrément: the Ministry of External Affairs announces envoys after the host country’s consent; the India–Nepal Treaty of Peace and Friendship dates from 1950.
  • BWF: the Badminton World Federation, headquartered in Kuala Lumpur.

CLAT angle

  • GK numbers: 3,335 sq km and about 42% (Amazon); 3 astronauts, 400 km, 3 days (Gaganyaan); 17 years (Jagsher).
  • Static links: 1988 series, 1950 treaty, Kuala Lumpur headquarters: each news item carries one fixed fact.
  • Careful reading: the Amazon figure is for 12 months through July, not a calendar year; Jagsher won bronze, not a higher medal.
  • International relations: a Secretary-level envoy is a rank above the usual Additional Secretary.
