DAILY NEWS WRAP | 8 OCTOBER 2026
The Daily News Wrap for 8 October 2026 covers six stories from 6–7 October: the RBI’s first repo-rate hike of the cycle, an attack on a tanker with an all-Indian crew in the Black Sea, the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, a third cheetah home in Madhya Pradesh, India’s reply to the OIC at the United Nations, and Lionel Messi’s international retirement.
1. RBI raises the repo rate to 5.50%
On 7 October 2026, the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Reserve Bank of India raised the policy repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50%. The rate had been at 5.25% since it was cut in December 2025. The MPC also changed its stance from neutral to calibrated tightening. With the hike, the Standing Deposit Facility rate moves to 5.25% and the Marginal Standing Facility rate to 5.75%. For 2026-27, the RBI projects CPI inflation at 5.2% and real GDP growth at 7.1%. Exam fact: the repo rate is the rate at which the RBI lends short-term funds to banks.
2. Black Sea: 23 Indian crew safe after tanker attack
The Liberia-flagged oil tanker Aframax Rio was attacked by unmanned surface vessels (drone boats) on 6 October 2026 near Sochi, on Russia’s Black Sea coast. According to preliminary data from the Russian Transport Ministry, the vessel’s all-Indian crew of 23 was saved and no one was hurt. India called for de-escalation after the attacks on ships in the Black Sea. Exam fact: the Black Sea is linked to the Sea of Marmara through the Bosphorus Strait.
3. Chemistry Nobel 2026: Henri Kagan and Kenso Soai
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Chemistry to French chemist Henri Kagan and Japanese chemist Kenso Soai “for the discovery of non-linear effects and autocatalysis in asymmetric organic synthesis”. Their work concerns chiral molecules, which exist in two mirror-image forms, like a left and a right hand. In medicines, one form may treat a disease while its mirror image may cause side effects, which is why making the right form matters.
4. Project Cheetah: a third habitat in Madhya Pradesh
On 7 October 2026, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav released two cheetahs, named Vyom and Neera, into the Veerangana Durgavati Tiger Reserve in Sagar district, in the Bundelkhand region. After Kuno National Park and Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary, it becomes the third cheetah habitat in the State. Exam fact: the cheetah was declared extinct in India in 1952, and Project Cheetah began at Kuno in 2022.
5. India rejects OIC remarks at the UN
On 6 October 2026, Lok Sabha MP Biplab Kumar Deb delivered India’s national statement in the Sixth Committee of the UN General Assembly on the agenda item “Measures to Eliminate International Terrorism”. India rejected the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC)‘s remarks on Jammu and Kashmir and said the group is “unable to distinguish between the victim and perpetrator”. Exam fact: the UNGA’s Sixth Committee deals with legal matters.
6. Lionel Messi retires from international football
Lionel Messi retired from international football on 6 October 2026. In his last match, a friendly, Argentina beat Benin 3-0; Messi scored one goal and provided two assists. It was his record-extending 208th international appearance, and the goal was his record-extending 126th for Argentina. Exam fact: Argentina won the 2022 FIFA World Cup under Messi’s captaincy.
Legal, constitutional and institutional points
- Monetary Policy Committee: the RBI body that sets the policy repo rate; on 7 Oct 2026 it raised the rate to 5.50% and moved to a calibrated-tightening stance.
- Policy corridor: SDF 5.25% (floor), repo 5.50%, MSF 5.75% (ceiling).
- UN General Assembly, Sixth Committee: the main committee for legal questions, where India answered the OIC.
- Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC): the grouping whose J&K remarks India rejected.
- Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences: awards the Chemistry (and Physics) Nobel.
- Project Cheetah: reintroduction of a species declared extinct in India in 1952; Kuno (2022), Gandhi Sagar, now Veerangana Durgavati.
The CLAT angle
- Economy passages often ask what a repo-rate hike signals: costlier bank borrowing from the RBI, used to rein in inflation.
- Know the stance vocabulary: neutral versus calibrated tightening; a passage may ask which stance rules out near-term cuts.
- Map GK: Sochi is on Russia’s Black Sea coast; the Bosphorus links the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara.
- International organisations: match the Sixth Committee to legal matters and the OIC to the J&K remarks India rejected.
- Environment GK: cheetah extinct in India in 1952; Kuno, Gandhi Sagar and Veerangana Durgavati are the three MP habitats.
