CURRENT AFFAIRS | 13 JUNE 2026
Indian sport lost one of its finest marksmen and coaches: legendary shooter Jaspal Rana died on Friday, June 12, 2026, at the age of 49, reportedly of a sudden cardiac arrest in his sleep. He was travelling as a coach with the Indian team for the ISSF Shooting World Cup in Munich at the time.
A child prodigy, Rana announced himself on the world stage by winning an Asian Games gold at Hiroshima in 1994 at just 18, and went on to amass medals across the Asian Games, Commonwealth Games and World Cups. An Olympic medal, however, eluded him throughout his competitive career as a pistol shooter.
His second act as a coach proved equally influential. As junior India coach he shaped a generation of shooters and is best remembered as the mentor who guided Manu Bhaker to her historic double bronze at the Paris 2024 Olympics — making her the first Indian to win two medals at a single Olympic edition since Independence. Rana was known as a blunt, straight-talking figure in Indian shooting.
Constitutional / Legal Framework
Sports governance in India sits within a clear institutional and legal frame. National sport is administered by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports through bodies such as the Sports Authority of India (SAI), while National Sports Federations (NSFs) — here the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) — govern individual disciplines under the National Sports Development Code. The State’s encouragement of sport draws on Article 51A(j) (the fundamental duty to strive towards excellence) and the broader welfare goals of the DPSP. Sport is a State List subject, though the Union supports it through national schemes such as Khelo India and TOPS (Target Olympic Podium Scheme).
