CURRENT AFFAIRS | 15 JUNE 2026
Tripura is moving to give its ‘Queen’ Pineapple a global moment. Declared the State Fruit in 2018 and granted a Geographical Indication (GI) tag the same year, the prized variety will be showcased through the Tripura Global Pineapple Festival at Delhi’s Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium on June 27, ahead of International Pineapple Day.
Tripura grows two varieties, Queen and Kew, over about 11,698 hectares, producing ~1.71 lakh MT a year with a surplus of ~40,000 MT. The Queen variety stands out for its distinct aroma and fibreless flesh, rich in vitamins, calcium, magnesium, potassium and iron. The state has exported 33.10 MT of Queen and Kew to the UAE and Bangladesh, plus Germany and the US.
The push is powered by ‘Mission Pineapple’, a Rs 236-crore programme (2020) under the Ministry of DoNER (Development of North Eastern Region), positioning Tripura as a significant North-East player in agro-marketing and export. The GI tag was granted under the Geographical Indications of Goods Act, 1999.
Constitutional / Legal Framework
The Queen Pineapple’s protection flows from the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration & Protection) Act, 1999, which shields products whose quality or reputation is tied to a specific origin. Promotion runs through the Ministry of DoNER and export facilitation via APEDA. India’s first GI-tagged product was Darjeeling Tea (2004), a static-GK anchor for any GI question.
CLAT Angle
GI tags are a CLAT staple. Expect questions on the GI Act 1999, the difference between a GI and a patent/trademark, India’s first GI (Darjeeling Tea), and the DoNER ministry. The “State Fruit 2018” and “two varieties: Queen and Kew” facts are common traps.

Mnemonic / Memory Hook
“QUEEN of the North-East, crowned by GI-99.” Tripura’s Queen Pineapple wears a GI tag under the GI Act 1999. Remember the static anchor: “Darjeeling Tea = India’s first GI (2004).”
Why this matters for CLAT 2027: GI tags and IPR are reliable CLAT scorers. Knowing the GI Act 1999, the GI-vs-patent distinction, India’s first GI (Darjeeling Tea), and the DoNER ministry’s North-East focus will help you ace CLAT 2027 GK on geographical indications.
